Welcome!

Welcome to Confabulation, a weekly Flesh and Blood newsletter about the game, the meta, the community, and everything in between.

Welcome!
Uprising (Pavel Kondrashov), or how I feel trying to figure out a meta or a format in my own head

Hi! Welcome to Confabulation, my new weekly Flesh and Blood newsletter where I discuss the game, the meta, the community, and everything in between. I'll usually focus on topics related to competitive play, but sometimes I'll branch out beyond FaB-specific content and write about learning, building effective mental models, competing in general, and more. I'll also write about my personal experience as a competitive FaB player who didn't come from being a competitor in another game.

For me, writing has always been a way of organizing my thoughts. A large reason I’m starting this newsletter is to develop my own ideas and help myself prepare for the wonderful competitive experiences this game provides us. This newsletter is an invitation for you to join me in this expedition: please consider my writings as more of an entry into a public conversation than a sermon or a declaration of truth. On that note, I encourage you to comment on my posts (which I'll be enabling soon) or share your thoughts with me on my Twitter, linked below!

You can read Confabulation as a blog right here on this website or subscribe here on this site to receive new posts as an email newsletter right when they come out. I'll be trying to publish weekly. Each week, you'll typically find the following sections:

  • Red Hot Links, a curated collection of other Flesh and Blood media that I’ve consumed this week that I think are particularly worth a read, watch, or listen;
  • Run Through, a section where I write my thoughts and reactions to whatever big piece of news has popped up in the game or the community over the past week;
  • and then the main topic, which will be the bulk of the post.

This first week, the main topic will be about exploring the brand new Uprising Classic Constructed meta.

To be very clear: I don’t purport to be an expert at the game nor of the same calibre as the game’s top players. Thus far, I haven’t put nearly as much time or intentionality into practice and preparation as other players have, so the nuances of game knowledge simply can't match the best of the best. I don’t claim that reading this newsletter will give you all the answers you’re looking for.

I do, however, believe I have a strong grasp of the game and its fundamentals as well as a good pulse on the competitive side of the community. I'd like to think that I can contribute something to the community’s discourse on strategy and the philosophy of FaB. My posts usually won't be easy How To's or quick Primers, but rather an honest (and probably disjointed, circuitous) reflection of my thoughts about the topic.

About Me

I'm a 23-year-old recent university graduate from Toronto, Ontario. I've been playing FaB since January 2021, when my friend and roommate bought a box and we dove into the game together. Before that we'd played Android: Netrunner at the kitchen (coffee shop) table, but never competitively. I also played Hearthstone for about a year from about Goblins vs. Gnomes to Whispers of the Old Gods.

I like to call myself a “B-tier” player. I’ve had decent-to-okay results, placing 15th at Canadian Nationals last year and 24th at the Calling: New Jersey this May. Recently, I made the finals of three ProQuest Season 2 events here in Ontario, including winning the event at Hairy Tarantula and conceding to my opponent before playing a late-night finals at Red Riot Games.

I'll be moving to the Netherlands for grad school in August, and am looking forward to embedding into a new competitive season on that side of the ocean, starting with Pro Tour 2.

If you have a question for me, have any feedback about the site, have a piece of media you think would be great for Red Hot Links, or otherwise just want to reach out, the best place to find me is on Twitter @ghsher. I'd love to hear from you!
